January in review

I know I’m late, but January is over…finally. So that means it’s time (well, past time) to review the movies I watched last month. It’s a mix of new and old movies, as usual. Also, mild spoilers!

Death At A Funeral
2007
Rated R
Comedy

4 out of 5
Rewatch

An absolutely funny movie, one I’ve watched at least 10 times. Alan Tudyk is the best part of the movie. I’m not a person who usually watched comedy movies, but this one is a must watch if you haven’t already.

Demonic Toys
1992
Rated R
Horror

2 out of 5
First Watch

It’s a Full Moon movie, I feel like that’s all I need to say. It’s a crazy movie about toys coming to life and taking out all their anger on people.

Primate
2026
Rated R
Horror

2.5 out of 5
First Watch

I do enjoy a good animal centered horror movie, this one was okay. I don’t picture myself watching it again, unless someone else wants to see it. I like the fact that they did use a full suit for Ben – using an actual actor for those scenes. The scenes that were the most terrifying were the scenes where you were taken into the world of Tony Kotsur (Adam), as a viewer you know what’s going on, when the world goes silent it brings the dread & uneasiness of the events to you. I do suggest a watch of this, just for the scenes of Tony (Adam).

Looky-Loo
2025
Not Rated
Horror

3.5 out of 5
First Watch

If you don’t like found footage movies, this one is not for you. Looky-Loo is pieces together with the videos the killer took, taking you through the stalking all the way to the murder. This is one of the best found footage movies to come out in the 2020’s so far.

Roofman
2025
Rated R
Comedy

3 out of 5
First Watch

Roofman is more of a mixture of comedy and crime. The true story behind this movie is crazy enough, so of course they had to make a movie about it. I gave it a 3 out of 5 because they didn’t take as many liberties as other things based on crime (looking at you Ryan Murphy). There are so many points in the movie where you want to look it up to see if this story actually is true.

Kombucha
2025
Not Rated
Horror

3.5 out of 5
First Watch

We all know not to “drink the kool-aid” (in reality it was flavor aid), we can now add kombucha to that too. Work places are always scary, but sidelining your dreams to work somewhere that seems a little too good to be true is another type of scary. The concept of the movie is great, some of the effects are lacking, but this one I’m sure I’ll watch again.

A Monster In Paris
2011
Rated PG
Family/Musical

3 out of 5
First Watch

A type of movie I don’t watch that often, but I’m glad I watched this one. It’s a fun movie with a lot of music – the huge chase scene was a major part of the movie. It also has heart, hopefully teaching some kids (and some adults) not to judge people on their appearance. The film was released in French and English – with Catherine O’Hara being the voice of Madame Carlotta in the English version.

Night Patrol
2025
Rated R
Horror

1 out of 5
First Watch

I honestly forgot I watched this. That should sum this movie up pretty well. I think the concept is interesting, but the script just wasn’t there for it.

Meth Gator
2024
PG-13
Horror

1.5 out of 5
First Watch

An alligator eating bags of meth that somehow make him bigger. I’m not an expert, but I thought meth made you lose weight, but alligator DNA is different from human, so may that is how it works. Watch for a great laugh. Laughing and questioning your choice to turn this on is what you’ll be doing for the 1 hour and 30 minute runtime.

Weekend At Bernie’s
1989
Rated PG-13
Comedy

3.5 out of 5
Rewatch

This is a childhood favorite, I absolutely love this movie and will tell everyone to watch it if they haven’t seen it.

Hanky Panky
2023
Not rated
Horror

3 out of 5
First Watch

A different kind of alien movie, I guess. It’s a funny movie with a napkin that loves to clean up messes (yes, it talks) and a hat trying to take over the world. The napkin and hat do fight before the movie is over.

Attack Of The Killer Chickens
2015
Not Rated
Horror

1.5 out of 5
First Watch

I don’t know what to say about this. The chickens do come from outer space, and yes there is a half person half chicken.

Dick Tracy
1990
Rated PG
Action

4 out of 5
Rewatch

Dick Tracy is another childhood classic for me. The costume design to the set designs are both perfect for the feeling of this movie. (Academy award winner for art direction & make up, nominated for costume design)

Mother of Flies
2025
Not Rated
Horror

3 out of 5
First Watch

I watched a few videos, after seeing the movie, about how some of the effects were done. The crew (three people) around this movie are very hands on and DIY crew. I really like that fact with the movies they’ve made so far. This one is a take on a tale of a witch in the woods and a young adult willing to try anything to help her health – dad is just there to be supportive. After a while, dad can’t be supportive over what he’s seeing. I can say, at the end it all works out for everyone involved.
